Artists Statement

The conscious and subconscious mind are in a perpetual state of collecting, sorting, filing,
and recalling facts which define our reality.
We assign pathways to make sense of our individual and collective experiences.
All the while, our imagination whispers to us that there is more beyond.

A place exists, an unmarked, rumbling world underlying the deep strata of life.

Addressing this enigmatic region, a painting might begin with a structure wholly earthbound, an illustration of what is seen.
But when the image gets pushed and pulled, through texture, color and composition to visually go beyond its origin, it might begin to resonate as something other, to transcend its content.

Not a painting of something, but a painting to something.

To tickle what swings between here and there, the abstract and the figurative,
the known and the sensed.

An attempt to conjure this is a formidable challenge.
Too oblique and the connection is severed.
Too concrete, and we are stuck in the familiar.

Perhaps the spirit of a thing can be conveyed when, standing in front of the painting,
one can grab hold of something,
vaguely familiar,
as an invitation to experience the vibration of some exotic plane.
